The Eiffel Műhelyház of the Hungarian State Opera is a new highlight in District X and the whole of Budapest. Originally built in 1886, the hall was once part of the MÁV Northern Railway Workshop, and after an extensive renovation, it has transformed into a modern and multifunctional event venue, hosting spectacular events. One unique aspect of the building is our personal connection to it. During the renovation of this historic landmark, we were responsible for project management tasks. However, our involvement goes beyond its creation—we also frequently choose it as a venue for our events.
The hall’s impressive ceiling height is breathtaking. At its center, there is a spacious communal area and a suspended walkway, featuring an authentic MÁV 327 locomotive and an attached dining car, reminiscent of the building’s industrial past. The suspended walkway connects two elevated gallery sections, leading to the entrances of the Bánffy Miklós Theatre on the left and the Fricsay Ferenc Sound Engineering Control Room on the right, which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
"What was once a vision of the General Director in 2013 is now a reality. Being part of the professional journey from dream to the grand opening performance, witnessing the five-year-long reconstruction and transformation of Hungary’s largest industrial heritage site, felt like a once-in-a-lifetime engineering experience. We were wrong. Next came the renovation of the Opera House itself, but that is another story.
The 25,000 m² facility features a 300-seat rehearsal stage, allowing full-scale stage sets for Opera House productions to be tested. The 2,500 m² foyer is also available for exclusive events. Additional spaces include dedicated singer, orchestra, and dance rehearsal rooms to support the artists.
One of the building’s key assets is the internationally acclaimed recording studio, which enables high-quality symphonic recordings. The entire technical operations of the Hungarian State Opera have been relocated here, including set storage logistics, an instrument workshop, costume storage, carpentry, locksmithing, painting, tailoring, wig-making, and shoemaking workshops, as well as various storage spaces.
For the well-being of Opera staff, the complex features a multi-hectare park, a mini football field, a rooftop garden, a restaurant, and a café. The building also functions as a visitor center, providing a comprehensive insight into the daily life of the Hungarian State Opera."
